Goal Setting + Doing It Differently in 2022

I believe in goal setting. Not in the hype, New Years Resolution-y kind of way. In the way that we need to have a direction to go in that matters to us in order to feel like we have purpose, energy and meaning! Statistics show us that approximately 35% of the people who set New Year’s Resolutions in 2020 kept them. That number varies each year, but a common trend we see is that by mid-February, most people have abandoned their January 1 focus and motivation. I don't think it's that something is wrong with the people. I think it's that something is wrong with the type of goals we're setting and the information we are using to achieve them!

I believe every day can have the spirit of January 1 if we set the intention, have the support, and discipline the follow through! In fact, today I did a short 30-minute goal setting workshop for current and new members of The Worthy Wellness Project. The way I approach goal setting can take 20 minutes or 20 hours, depending on how deep and detailed you want to get. Today's workshop outlined a 5-step journey that can be customized to someone's life to reflect the phase and season they are in. We identified what matters to us, clarified internal desires, created opportunities, and specified action steps.

One of the big take-home messages was that exclusively-external goals like achieving weight loss or accomplishing a certain professional status are often created from a place of deficit, lack and want. When we start our journey from a place of want, we continue to cultivate a feeling of not-enoughness. We need to flip the script and begin from a place of recognition, gratitude, and belief so that we're actually working toward something that exists! When we integrate all parts of self to show up for that ultimate potential, the experience we have on the way becomes the actual goal.

The way we GET to feel every day can become the reason we show up! The outcomes from our efforts end up being sweet side effects of the way we are learning to live our lives. And yes, sometimes those side effects do show up as pounds lost or more energy, better sleep or a happier mood, among other tangible, measurable outcomes!

Today being December 29 means you have just a few more days to sign up for YOUR Worthy Wellness Project and commit to the daily experiment that is your wellness. A year is just one way to categorize to the passage of time, and in 365 days you'll be looking back over 2022 to see how far you've come. Will you look back and wish you had stayed the course and been consistent with the efforts you began in January? Or will you look back with overwhelming gratitude for your efforts as you showed up day after day with simple, consistent action?

Let the WWP guide you with weekly newsletters, a community of wellness warriors, and an online arsenal of support and resources. Commit to learning something new about your body, food and mindset every week of the new year. Decide that this year will be different because you will embrace yourself and show up for YOU even when you don't feel like it.
